The Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation is actively involved in and supports research. The Platform Aachen at the Ludwig Forum, the Hyperrealism research project under the direction of the mumok –Ludwig Foundation in Vienna, the Media Art Symposium in Budapest, or the studies on the art of the Russian avant-garde at the Museum Ludwig are prime examples. The approach advocated by both founders, to support art studies, stems from their respective biographies and understanding of art. In 1950 Peter Ludwig earned his doctorate with a thesis on Picasso’s image of man, supervised by Friedrich Gercke and Friedrich Bollnow. In future, the Foundation will initiate and fund research on the Collection and its works as well as undertake its own projects. The spectrum is diverse, ranging from provenance, cross-cultural comparisons, studies on the Collection’s history, monographs on a single artist or work, through to issues of cultural politics.
